The Master of Arts in Teaching is an intensive, one or two year program designed for educators to enhance their professional skills and to help them transform their schools. It is a unique program driven by inquiry, experience and demonstration of competency, rather than a focus on courses or exams. Participation in sessions can be done in a number of ways: online, in person, or a combination of the two.
UVGSE seeks applicants who have experiences as effective classroom, school, or educational leadership. Candidates are educators who bring subject matter expertise, educational and life experiences that are likely to enrich schools and students, a commitment to working with young people and colleagues in education, a readiness to engage in the complexity and uncertainty of teaching and leadership, and the initiative and growth orientation required to learn in an experiential and performance based setting.
Our masters programs are not for everybody. If you want to pursue a sequence of required and elective courses, you won’t find that at UVGSE. If, however, you are a self-motivated person who wants to look deeply at your own practice, think about critical issues, and are interested in meaningful measures of teacher effectiveness, then our programs are a good match for you.
In your Masters in Teaching, you will demonstrate a foundation of competency based on the 10 InTASC standards for teaching (UVEI alumni and concurrent interns fulfill this requirement through their UVEI experience); engage in culminating MAT competencies that deepen, enrich and extend your teaching practice and understanding; examine an area of interest or passion in depth through action research; apply the interests, talents, values and goals you already possess to engage with other thinkers; challenge conventional ideas about kids, classrooms and schools; and conduct research to expand your vision of learning for the diverse range of children and youth inside—and beyond—the school.
UVGSE offers two pathways to the UVGSE Master of Arts in Teaching: the MAT in Instructional Practice and the MAT in Teacher Leadership.
The MAT with a concentration in Teaching is designed to advance practicing and aspiring teachers’ skills in using research-based frameworks to deeply understand students’ learning and development, plan focused and differentiated instruction, engage students in productive disciplinary instruction, develop a variety of flexible assessment tools to understand student learning, and collaboratively reflect on their and their colleagues’ practice.
THE MAT with a concentration in Teacher Leadership is designed for practicing teachers to develop their skills and capacities, and understand the research that supports best practices in curriculum leadership and school change, instructional coaching, and professional learning facilitation.
